What Defines Success for Your Business?
How to define meaningful success metrics that matter beyond vanity numbers. A guide to setting the right goals.
It’s easy to get caught up in metrics that look good on a dashboard but don’t actually tell you anything about the health of your business.
Vanity metrics are seductive. Revenue is up, user count is growing, engagement is increasing. But these numbers can mask deeper problems: are your customers actually satisfied? Are you building something sustainable? Is the growth profitable?
The Questions That Matter
Before you define success, ask yourself:
What problem are we solving? If you can’t articulate this clearly, your success metrics will be meaningless. You’ll be optimizing for the wrong things.
For whom are we solving it? Understanding your customer deeply shapes what success looks like. Success for a B2B SaaS company looks very different from success for a consumer mobile app.
What does healthy growth look like? Growth is not always good. Rapid growth that requires constant fundraising or sacrifices unit economics is not sustainable. Define what healthy looks like for your business.
Setting Real Success Metrics
Real success metrics have three qualities:
- They’re actionable - You can do something about them
- They’re measurable - You can track them consistently
- They align with your mission - They measure what actually matters to your business
At Tomorrow Built, we believe success is built on shared risk and real accountability. That shapes how we measure our impact.
